About Downtown Denver
The downtown area of Denver is a common term often loosely encompassing several areas defined on their own such as LoDo, the theatre district, etc. But the heart of downtown, also known as the central business district, is generally defined as the area from Broadway east to Speer Blvd and Larimer Street, and from Colfax Ave. north to Larimer and 20th Street. Downtown Denver is the cultural, governmental, financial, and business center for the Rocky Mountain region. It’s also the largest employment center in the metro area.
There’s a common perception that the majority of Downtown Denver’s housing growth in the 1990’s happened in Lower Downtown, or LoDo. However, the rate of residential growth in the upper end of downtown (the central business district) has been on par with that of LoDo. Homes in the Central Business District are comprised of several new high-rise and loft projects, as well as several high-rise condo and apartment buildings that were built in the 1970’s and 1980’s as part of Denver’s urban renewal projects. In more recent years, several vacant historic buildings in CBD have been renovated into apartment, condo, and loft projects.
Residents in the heart of downtown are surrounded by some of the city’s very best dining, shopping, culture and arts. With a convenient, free “mall ride” (several buses travelling up and down 16th Street, also known as the 16th Street Mall) everything is a quick trip away, making cars necessary only for travel outside of the city.
